In today’s world, peanut allergies are running rampant. However, it is most noticeable in school classrooms. In many classrooms (or even entire schools), students are not permitted to bring to school any food that contains peanuts. Usually, the school provide a list of pre-packaged food that are safe (i.e. peanut-free) for students to bring with them. However, most (if not all) of the food on the list has gluten. So, what on earth is a parent who has a gluten-intolerant to do in a peanut-free classroom? First, talk to the school administrators and discuss your child’s gluten-intolerance. (Hint: You might need a note from a doctor to verify this.) Then, bring a list of the snacks (with the ingredients!) ┬áthat you are going to send with your child everyday. From that point, you will need to discuss what is acceptable and not acceptable. Sadly, it might not be that simple in every school. You will need to be an advocate for your child and maybe even an educator if the school administrators are not knowledgeable about gluten-intolerance.

Also, the recipes on this list are gluten free and peanut free. However, they are not nut-free. If your child has a nut allergy, there are recipes that you’ll need to avoid completely. Please check ingredient lists carefully! FYI: A peanut is not a nut – it is a legume. Therefore, a person who has a peanut allergy often can tolerate nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc). That is why many of the recipes on this list have nuts in them but are still considered peanut allergy-friendly.

A final word abut the types of recipes on this list. I tried to find gluten-free, peanut-free recipes of common snacks for in school classrooms, Ideally, all children would have fresh fruits and vegetables to eat. Typically, though, cereal, processed crackers, etc. are the norm. Thus, the recipes on the list are substitutes for their gluten-filled counterparts.

Please keep checking back as I add to the list. Also, feel free to share this with parents, educators, or anyone else who might benefit from gluten free peanut free snacks!
